The Challenge
Cognitive Overload
Standard productivity tools often ignore the cognitive barriers faced by students with ADHD, dyslexia, or sensory processing differences. Cluttered interfaces can increase anxiety rather than reducing it.
The "Calm" Goal
The challenge was to create a "calm technology" solution that reduces overwhelm, masks distracting stimuli, and promotes equitable access to study resources—without looking "medical" or sterile.
"How might we design a study tool that works with a neurodivergent brain, rather than forcing it to adapt?"
The Solution
I developed a unified platform using a Glassmorphism aesthetic—mimicking the depth of frosted glass to create hierarchy without visual noise. Key features target specific accessibility needs:
-
Text-to-Speech For reading support
-
Ambient Sound Sensory regulation
-
Simplified UI Executive function aid
Unified Dashboard
The central hub tracks study sessions and vocabulary stats at a glance. The interface uses soft shadows and translucency (Glassmorphism) to keep the most important task—studying—in clear focus while maintaining a premium feel.
Sensory-Friendly Focus Mode
A distraction-free environment designed for ADHD brains. Users can toggle "Brown Noise" or ambient soundscapes (Rain, Cafe) to mask background noise. The timer is large and distinct, reducing time blindness.
Smart Dictionary
Supporting auditory learners and those with dyslexia, definitions are presented with generous line-height and integrated Text-to-Speech (TTS). This multi-modal approach reinforces vocabulary acquisition without visual stress.
Reflection & Impact
StudyBuddy demonstrates that accessibility isn't just about compliance—it's about design excellence. By prioritizing sensory controls and multi-modal support from the beginning, we created a tool that empowers students to manage their learning independently and with confidence.
